Overview
Education was the core of Mzee Okee's life. He taught for forty years across Northern Uganda, from Kitgum to Gulu, Lira to Soroti, and believed without reservation that no child should be denied schooling because of poverty. He founded Lokung Secondary School, wrote O-Level Commerce textbooks, and quietly paid the school fees of students who could not afford them. The Foundation's education mission is that belief made permanent.
Why It Matters
Lamwo District remains one of the most underserved in Uganda for secondary education. Geographic remoteness, poverty, and the lingering effects of decades of conflict mean that many academically capable students never complete school. The Foundation targets this gap directly.
What We Do
Okee Barmich Scholarship Fund
Three bursary streams provide direct financial support to students in Lamwo District. The Okee Lifetime Bursary covers full, half, or quarter term fees for financially vulnerable students. The Pangira Prize offers term-by-term excellence awards for top-performing students. The Lamoo Prize celebrates top-performing female students each term.
School Support
The Foundation works with schools in Pangira, Lokung, and surrounding areas to identify students at risk of dropping out and connect them with available support. We partner with Head Teachers and community leaders to surface the students who need help most.
Expanding Access
As the Foundation grows, we aim to extend our reach to more schools across Lamwo District and Northern Uganda, building on the network Mzee Okee spent his career creating.
“He believed that any child who showed a love for learning deserved every chance. That belief did not die with him.”
